Wind. Salt. Sun. Cold air. Sudden rain.
If you spend time outdoors — surfing, hiking, running coastal paths or simply living an active life outside — your skin is constantly adapting. And while the Welsh outdoors is invigorating, it can also be demanding.
The key to looking after your skin in the elements isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things consistently.
1. Protect the Barrier
Your skin barrier is your first line of defence. It keeps moisture in and environmental stress out. Wind exposure, UV rays, salt water and temperature shifts can all weaken it, leaving skin tight, reactive or dehydrated.
Support it with gentle cleansing and barrier-respecting products. Avoid harsh, stripping cleansers — especially after a long day outdoors. If your skin feels squeaky clean or tight, it’s usually a sign it’s been over-cleansed.
Instead, choose formulas that remove sweat, SPF and buildup without disrupting balance.
2. Cleanse, Don’t Strip
After surfing or hiking, it’s tempting to scrub everything off. But aggressive cleansing can do more harm than good.
An oil-to-milk cleanser is ideal for outdoor skin because it dissolves SPF, salt and excess sebum while maintaining the skin’s natural moisture. It lifts away what doesn’t belong — without compromising what does.
Clean skin should feel calm and comfortable, not tight.
3. Rehydrate and Rebalance
Cold air and wind can increase water loss from the skin. Even oily skin can become dehydrated when exposed to the elements.
After cleansing, replenish with lightweight hydration that supports the skin barrier. Look for botanical oils or humectants that attract moisture without clogging pores. Hydrated skin is more resilient and better able to cope with environmental stress.
4. Respect the Sun — Even in Wales
Cloud cover doesn’t eliminate UV exposure. In fact, long days outdoors — especially near water — can increase cumulative sun impact.
Daily SPF is essential if you’re surfing, hiking or spending extended time outside. And at the end of the day, ensure it’s properly removed to prevent congestion and imbalance.
Protection and proper removal go hand in hand.
5. Keep It Simple
When battling the elements, simplicity wins. Overloading your skin with multiple active ingredients can increase sensitivity, especially when it’s already stressed by wind or sun.
A consistent routine — cleanse, hydrate, protect — is often more effective than a complicated one.
With the right support, your skin can handle salt spray, hilltop winds and long days in the open air — and still feel balanced at the end of it.
Because skincare shouldn’t fight the elements.
It should help you thrive in them.
